Can I drop off an injured animal to your location?

We do not have a public drop-off center. All our carers work from their private homes. Please call our hotline first so we can arrange for a volunteer to pick up the animal and transport it to the most appropriate carer.

Do you rescue snakes?

We are not qualified snake handlers. If you have found a snake, we will connect you with a licensed and qualified snake catcher in your area. Do not attempt to handle the snake yourself.

How can I help prevent wildlife injuries in my area?

You can help by driving slowly at night, securing rubbish bins, keeping domestic pets contained, and using humane rodent control methods to protect native animals like owls and possums from ingesting poison.

I found an injured possum during the day. Is it okay?

No. Possums are nocturnal, so if you see one on the ground during the day, it is likely sick, injured, or orphaned. This is an emergency situation, and you should contact our hotline immediately.

What do I do if I find a bat?

Tolga Bat Hospital can be contacted on 07 4091 2683.

Please do not handle bats. There is a risk, albeit very small, that the bat is infected with rabies or a lyssavirus, a rabies-like virus. If you are bitten or scratched, gently wash the wound immediately with soap for about 5 minutes, apply iodine and then urgently contact your doctor for a possible rabies vaccination.

What should I do if I find a baby bird on the ground?

If the bird is fully feathered, it may be a fledgling learning to fly. Observe it from a distance. If it’s unfeathered, it needs immediate help. You can try to safely place it back in its nest if you can find it. If not, contact us for guidance.
